Living for the Backup

In the wake of the D7000's death, I reverted to my backup camera--my good ol' D50. Now, I used to be adamant that quality of equipment does not determine quality of photos. I still believe that the most important factor of a good photo is the eye of the photographer: balancing light, composing the image, and making the subjects feel comfortable. But I have now humbled myself: yes, there are things that my D7000 could do that my D50 can't. Equipment (and software, but that's another story) do make a difference. Luckily, this family came prepared with huge smiles and great attitudes, so their images are still beautiful.

I think a worst fear of mine is having a camera break during a session. It's one of those things that my anxiety really has a field day with. I worry about it every time I go out to shoot. And, of course, the day that I decide not to take my back up camera, what happens? Shutter failure. That's what. Luckily, the session had been gorgeous up to that point and we were only a few minutes from the end. So it's fine. Rest in peace to my camera, looking forward to a new one, and check out this beautiful family!

Ladies Looking Fierce!

I haven't been able to do as many "friend" shoots as I would like, so I was overjoyed to shoot these three roommates! They haven't known each other for very long, but 1) needed photos for their dating apps and 2) wanted pictures together! This seems like the start of a beautiful friendship. And they were certainly beautiful for their pictures!

Early Start on Senior Sessions

Way back in my days of second shooting for my dad, spring was always senior portrait session. Something surprising to me here in Utah is how many seniors get their pictures done in the fall. I think it's got something to do with yearbook photo submissions (we couldn't submit our own in PA...I don't think...I moved right before senior year so I don't really remember. I think I am in two different Washington yearbooks as a senior, though. But that's another story). Anyway, today I delivered my first senior session of the year.

Pro tip: I told my senior before I took the first picture that I needed him to pretend that he had known me for a really long time, so his pictures didn't have that awkward glaze of "who is this strange girl taking my picture?" Totally worked!

Bonus round! Right after this one an elderly gentleman next to the slide asked if we were married. When I quickly responded, no, we're taking his senior portraits, he replies, "So you're the mom?" 

So apparently my age is incredibly flexible.
